Truck decks one week, a crane fit-out the next. An expanding engineering business in Christchurch, New Zealand is looking for a Fitter Welder who enjoys that kind of variety.
The work covers welding, fitting, fabrication and assembly on custom decks for trucks, crane installs, trailers, transport repairs and all-round engineering jobs. Some come with full drawings; on others you use your own fabrication judgement. Accuracy and good calls matter. Suitable overseas applicants may be considered for employer-sponsored employment.

Key Responsibilities
- Build and install custom truck decks and transport bodies, and carry out crane fit-outs
- Weld mild steel, stainless and aluminium using MIG and TIG
- Fabricate parts and structures, then fit and assemble them
- Interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications
- Mark out, measure, cut and prepare material with accuracy
- Meet the required quality for every weld and fabrication, checking dimensions, structural soundness and finish on completed work
- Work out what each repair or fabrication needs and settle on a practical fix
- Repair transport equipment and truck bodies and take on general engineering repairs
- Deliver urgent, quick-turnaround workshop jobs efficiently
- Keep to engineering and certification rules, liaising with engineers for inspections and sign-off
- Keep safe work habits and a professional workshop
Requirements & Eligibility
- Minimum 5 years working professionally in fitting, welding or fabrication in a relevant role
- A proven practical record in fabrication and workshop work
- Strong MIG and TIG welding on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium/alloy
- Confident at fitting up and assembling fabricated structures
- Can work to technical drawings
- Can judge and fix practical fabrication problems independently
- Careful with measurements, tolerances and the quality of the finish
- Dependable about safety, accuracy and good workmanship
- An advantage: experience in truck, transport or heavy fabrication
- Holding welding tickets or relevant industry certifications is advantageous but not mandatory, and you are willing to gain additional welding certifications where required
- Can supply verifiable evidence of your trade experience and work history
- You must meet the New Zealand employment and visa requirements that apply
