Outboards, sterndrives and inboards all end up on the same bench when they misbehave. A marine service business in New Zealand, based around Hamilton, wants a Marine Technician who can diagnose the fault, fix it properly and prove it on the water.

The work covers engine mechanics, fuel and cooling, starting and charging circuits, rigging new outboards, fitting electronics, pre-delivery checks and sea trials. Some jobs are in the workshop, some at the customer's site and some on the water, alongside an experienced team. Employer sponsorship is available for suitably qualified overseas candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Find faults in the mechanical, electrical, fuel and cooling systems of marine engines
  • Service petrol outboards and other marine power units, including scheduled and preventative maintenance
  • Repair and overhaul engines, stripping, inspecting and rebuilding them and replacing worn parts
  • Decide on the right repair for each mechanical defect
  • Tune engines and test their performance
  • Use computer diagnostic tools and manufacturer software
  • Repair starting, charging and other marine electrical systems
  • Work on MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard units when needed
  • Rig outboards with controls, gauges and wiring, and fit marine electronics and accessories
  • Carry out pre-delivery inspections, commissioning and sea trials
  • Travel to customers for mobile service and repairs when required
  • Keep job sheets, service records and technical notes up to date, following manufacturer procedures
  • Keep the workshop safe and orderly and deliver high-quality work every time

Requirements & Eligibility

  • An NZQF Level 4 qualification in a marine, mechanical or related trade, or an overseas equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years working on internal-combustion engines
  • Hands-on experience with outboard or marine engines, including diagnosing faults and repairing them well
  • Solid practical knowledge of servicing engines and replacing mechanical parts
  • Experience with marine electrical and charging systems and with computer diagnostic equipment
  • Able to follow manufacturer service manuals and technical specifications
  • Mercury outboard experience is highly regarded, as is MerCruiser experience
  • SmartCraft and DTS knowledge is advantageous
  • Training or certification from a marine manufacturer is an advantage
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Happy to work alone and own your jobs, while fitting into an experienced technical team
  • Committed to safe work and quality workmanship
  • A full driver's licence is preferred
  • Must meet the relevant New Zealand employment and immigration requirements
