Probashi Kallyan Bank loan: is Tk 3 lakh at 9% a safer way to fund your job abroad?
Tips · 2026-10-19 · 10 min read

A Probashi Kallyan Bank loan is the government's own migration loan for workers going abroad. It lends up to Tk 3.00 lakh with no collateral, at 9% simple interest a year, for up to 3 years, and the bank decides within 7 working days of a complete application. If you need to borrow to take up a real job in Australia or New Zealand, it is a far safer route than a dalal's loan or an open-ended debt to relatives, as long as you borrow for honest costs only.
What the Probashi Kallyan Bank migration loan is
Probashi Kallyan Bank is a state bank set up for migrant workers. Its migration loan, called abhibashan rin in Bangla, exists so that a worker with a genuine job offer does not have to sell land or hand money to a middleman to cover the costs of leaving.
BMET points workers to it too. Its safe-migration checklist says that if you need money to migrate, you can take a collateral-free loan from Probashi Kallyan Bank. In other words, the government agency that clears you to leave also tells you where to borrow.
The bank publishes the terms on its own website, pkb.gov.bd. Read it yourself before you visit a branch, so you know the official terms and nobody can tell you otherwise.
The loan terms at a glance
| Term | What the bank says |
|---|---|
| Maximum amount | Up to Tk 3.00 lakh |
| Interest | 9% simple interest a year |
| Collateral | None needed |
| Length | Up to 3 years, grace period included |
| Decision | Within 7 working days of a complete application |
| Age | 18 to 60 years old |
| Account | A savings account at the branch, opened with at least Tk 500 |
| Guarantors | At least 2: one financially able person and one family member or close relative |
The grace period is counted inside the 3 years, not added on top. Ask the branch exactly how long yours will be and when the first instalment falls due, because that date will arrive while you are still settling into a new job.
What 9% interest means in taka
Simple interest is charged on the amount you borrowed, not on interest that has built up. On the full Tk 3.00 lakh, 9% for one year comes to Tk 27,000. If the whole amount stayed unpaid for all 3 years, the interest would add up to Tk 81,000.
Your real figure depends on the repayment schedule the branch gives you. Ask for that schedule in writing, with every instalment and its date, before you sign. Then show it to the family members who will help you repay, so nobody is surprised later.
Who can apply, and the guarantor question
You must be between 18 and 60 years old and open a savings account at the branch with at least Tk 500. You also need at least 2 guarantors: one person who is financially able, and one family member or close relative.
The guarantors are the part people rush. A guarantor is promising the bank that the loan will be repaid if you cannot pay. Sit down with both of them, show them the amount, the schedule and your job offer, and make sure they understand what they are signing. A guarantor who learns the details for the first time when a reminder arrives is a strained relationship waiting to happen.
Ask the branch for its current document list when you open the account. Requirements can be updated, and the branch's own list is the one that counts.
Is Tk 3 lakh enough for Australia or New Zealand?
Be honest with yourself here. The loan helps, but it is not a full budget for every route.
For Australia, the base application charge for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) is AUD 4,015.00. At Bangladesh Bank's ask rate of 85.7863 taka per Australian dollar on 8 October 2026, that is about Tk 344,000. That is a rough comparison at the rate published on that date, and exchange rates change. On top of the visa charge come English tests, health checks, police certificates and biometrics.
What you must never pay for is the employer's side. Home Affairs says on its cost of sponsoring page that the sponsoring employer must pay all the costs of becoming a sponsor and nominating a worker, and cannot pass them on to the visa holder or their family. Ask your employer in writing which costs they cover and which are yours.
For New Zealand, the Accredited Employer Work Visa costs from NZD $1540. Immigration New Zealand also says on its scam protection page that employers there cannot charge you fees for a job or make you pay any of their recruitment costs, including indirectly through a third party.
Then add the Bangladesh side. BMET's citizen charter puts the welfare fee and insurance premium at Tk 4500 in total, plus a Tk 250 clearance fee and source income tax that depends on your visa type. Our breakdown of the BMET clearance fee walks through each line.
Bank loan, family money or a dalal: how they compare
Most families weigh three ways of raising the money. Here is how they line up on the points that matter when something goes wrong.
| Option | Interest and terms | Paper trail | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Probashi Kallyan Bank loan | 9% simple a year, fixed and published, up to 3 years | Full: account, agreement, schedule | Guarantors are liable if you cannot repay |
| Borrowing from relatives | Whatever the family agrees, often unwritten | Usually none | Arguments over amounts and timing, and pressure on the family at home |
| A dalal's loan or "package" | Unclear, often bundled into one big figure | Little or none | Losing the money, and BMET warns it can lead to human trafficking |
BMET's warning is blunt: never rely on a dalal or middleman to get a job abroad, because it can lead to losing money and to human trafficking. A loan offered by the same person who promises you the job ties your debt to their word. If the job disappears, the debt does not.
Family money is not wrong, but write it down. A one-page note with the amount, the date and how you plan to repay protects both sides.
How to apply, step by step
- Get a real written job offer first. Check the employer and, if an agency is involved, check its licence on BMET's list before you borrow a single taka.
- Work out your budget from official figures: the visa charge, tests, health checks, police certificate, BMET clearance and your flight. Note which costs the employer has agreed in writing to pay.
- Borrow only what that budget leaves uncovered. A smaller loan means smaller instalments in your first months abroad.
- Visit a Probashi Kallyan Bank branch, ask for the current document list and open a savings account with at least Tk 500.
- Agree with your 2 guarantors, one financially able person and one family member or close relative, and explain the schedule to both.
- Hand in a complete application. The bank decides within 7 working days once the file is complete, so a missing paper costs you time.
- Ask for the repayment schedule in writing and keep a copy at home with your family.
- When you pay an agency, pay only by cheque, pay order or bank draft, as BMET tells workers to, and keep every receipt.
Repaying from Australia or New Zealand
Plan repayments before your first pay day. Send money home through the banking channel so every transfer leaves a record. Bangladesh Bank's remittance report says the government's cash incentive on remittances sent through banks rose to 2.5 percent from 1 January 2022; check the current rate with your bank before you count on it.
If an instalment will be late, talk to the branch before the date, not after. Your guarantors will thank you.
Returning later? Probashi Kallyan Bank also has a rehabilitation loan for returned workers, up to Tk 50.00 lakh at 9% simple interest for up to 10 years, with no collateral up to Tk 3.00 lakh and a registered mortgage above Tk 5.00 lakh. It is worth knowing about before you come home.
Common mistakes Bangladeshi workers make with migration loans
- Borrowing to pay a dalal. The loan is meant for legal migration costs. Handing borrowed money to a middleman puts you in debt for a job that may never exist.
- Borrowing to buy a visa or sponsorship. In Australia it is illegal to pay an employer to sponsor you, including through salary deductions, and it can lead to visa refusal or cancellation, fines or prison. Immigration New Zealand will decline an AEWV if you or your agent offered money for the job. Buying or selling visas inside Bangladesh is a crime too: our guide to why buying an Australia visa can mean prison explains section 33.
- Borrowing before the offer is checked. A loan taken "to be ready" starts costing interest while you wait.
- Paying in cash with no receipt. Without receipts, getting money back is much harder. If an agency has already cheated you, see how to complain to BMET.
- Keeping guarantors in the dark. They carry real responsibility. Tell them everything up front.
Check the route before you borrow
A loan only makes sense for a route you understand. Before you sign anything, read our plain guide to Australia's Skills in Demand (482) visa or to New Zealand's Accredited Employer Work Visa, so you know which costs are yours and which belong to the employer.
Frequently asked questions
How much can I borrow from Probashi Kallyan Bank to go abroad?
The migration loan goes up to Tk 3.00 lakh with no collateral. It runs for up to 3 years, including the grace period, and the bank decides within 7 working days of a complete application.
What is the Probashi Kallyan Bank loan interest rate?
The migration loan charges 9% simple interest a year. On the full Tk 3.00 lakh that is Tk 27,000 for one year, but your real total depends on the repayment schedule, so ask the branch for it in writing.
Do I need guarantors for an abhibashan rin?
Yes. You need at least 2 guarantors: one financially able person and one family member or close relative. You must also be 18 to 60 years old and open a savings account at the branch with at least Tk 500.
Can I use the loan to pay a recruiting agency?
You can use it for legal migration costs, but pay any agency only by cheque, pay order or bank draft, as BMET advises, and keep the receipts. Never use it to pay a dalal or to buy a visa or sponsorship, which is illegal in Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh.
Is the loan enough for an Australian work visa?
Often not on its own. The base charge for the subclass 482 visa is AUD 4,015.00, roughly Tk 344,000 at Bangladesh Bank's rate of 8 October 2026, before tests, health checks and other costs, so build a full budget first.
