Send money from Australia to Bangladesh: your first pay in taka and the records to keep
Tips · 2026-10-21 · 10 min read

To send money from Australia to Bangladesh safely, keep every step inside the banking system: your wages go into an Australian bank account, and a bank or money transfer service pays the money into your family's bank account at home. That record on both sides is what protects you if something goes wrong, what the receiving bank looks at for Form-C, and what lets you save in a Wage Earner Development Bond later. As a rough guide, at Bangladesh Bank's rate for 18 Oct 2026, AUD 1,000 came to about Tk 85,793.
Start with an Australian bank account in your own name
Everything starts with a normal bank account. Moneysmart, the Australian Government's money guidance service, says a new arrival can go to a bank branch, ask for an everyday (transaction) account with no fees, and show proof of identity such as a passport or driving licence. See the Moneysmart guide to money and working in Australia.
Moneysmart also says Australian employers usually pay wages into the worker's bank account and give a pay slip showing earnings, tax paid and super contributions.
Two more things belong in your first week:
- A tax file number (TFN). If you hold a visa with work rights, you can apply online through the ATO's tax file number application for temporary visitors. It is free, and the TFN should arrive within 28 days.
- Your pay slip. Fair Work says pay slips must be given within 1 working day of pay day, on paper or by email. Keep every one. Later, when you send money home, the pay slip shows where it came from.
What your Australian pay is worth in taka
The figures below are rough comparisons only, worked out from Bangladesh Bank's published rate for 18 Oct 2026. Rates change every day, and the rate a transfer service gives you will be its own, usually a little lower.
| Amount | What it is | Roughly in taka |
|---|---|---|
| AUD 1,000 | A round amount to compare transfer quotes | About Tk 85,793 |
| AUD 1,004.90 a week | Australia's National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026, for a 38-hour week, before tax | About Tk 86,213 |
| NZD 958 a week | New Zealand's adult minimum wage from 1 April 2026, for a 40-hour week, before tax | About Tk 66,903 |
| USD 20,000 | The Form-C line for one inward remittance (see below) | About Tk 24,71,000 |
Bangladesh Bank showed the Australian dollar at a bid rate of 85.7931 and an ask rate of 85.8881 taka; we used the lower bid rate, the side that applies when you sell Australian dollars. The New Zealand line is a cross rate with the Reserve Bank of Australia's 16 Oct 2026 figure of 1.2285 New Zealand dollars per Australian dollar. The US dollar line uses Bangladesh Bank's weighted average rate of 123.5500 taka. You can check today's rates on Bangladesh Bank's Exchange Rate of Taka page.
The minimum wage is a floor. Fair Work says most workers are covered by an award for their industry, and award rates may be higher than the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 an hour. The pay you are actually offered is in your contract. Our guide to Australia's Skills in Demand (482) visa explains how sponsored jobs are paid.
Tax and super come out before you can send anything
Your take-home pay is smaller than the figure on your contract. Tax is taken out, and your employer pays super on top. The general super guarantee rate is 12.00% from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Super goes into a fund in your name, not into your bank account, so you cannot send it home each month.
It is not lost, either. If you were on a temporary visa and later leave Australia for good, you may be able to claim it as a departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP), after you have left and your visa has ceased. Tax is taken from that payment too.
Bank or money transfer service, never hundi
From Australia you have two kinds of formal channel. You can send from your own bank, or use a money transfer service that pays into a bank account in Bangladesh. Both leave a receipt with a reference number, and the money arrives in your family's account under your name.
Hundi is different. You give cash to a shop or a "friend of a friend" in Sydney or Melbourne, and someone in Bangladesh hands taka to your family. There is no receipt that a bank recognises, no record that the money came from your wages, and nobody to complain to if it never arrives.
Before you choose a channel, check two numbers on the same day: the exchange rate the service will give you, and its fee. A low fee with a poor rate can cost more than a higher fee with a good rate.
Also ask the bank in Bangladesh whether any government cash incentive is paid on remittances that arrive through it, and at what rate. We could not confirm a current official figure, so rely only on what the bank or Bangladesh Bank tells you on the day.
Form-C: the 20,000 US dollar line
Bangladesh Bank's remittance report says no Form-C declaration is needed for an inward remittance up to 20,000 US dollars or its equivalent. At the rates above, 20,000 US dollars was roughly Tk 24,71,000, or about AUD 28,790 at the Reserve Bank of Australia's rate of 0.6947 US dollars per Australian dollar on 16 Oct 2026.
The limit matters when you send a lump sum, for example a year of savings to buy land or build a house. Before a large transfer, ask the receiving bank whether Form-C or any other paper is needed and what it wants to see. Your pay slips and transfer receipts answer that question quickly.
Saving at home: the Wage Earner Development Bond
The Wage Earner Development Bond is a savings bond in Bangladesh for wage earners. According to the Department of National Savings, it runs for 5 years and pays 12.00% simple interest on holdings up to Tk 15,00,000, with lower rates on larger amounts. There is no purchase limit, and both the money invested and the interest are free of income tax.
Ask a bank or the Department of National Savings how to buy it in your name, which papers are needed, and when the interest is paid.
If you borrowed to migrate, put the loan first. A Probashi Kallyan Bank migration loan of up to Tk 3.00 lakh at 9% simple interest has to be repaid on the schedule the branch gave you, and your 2 guarantors carry the risk if you fall behind. Our guide to the Probashi Kallyan Bank migration loan explains how that repayment works.
How to set up your first transfer home
- Open your account and give the details to your employer. Use an everyday account in your own name, so your wages land there from the first pay.
- Read your first pay slip. Check the hours, the pay rate, the tax and the super.
- Get your family's bank details exactly right. The account holder's name as it appears on the account, the account number, the bank, the branch and the branch's routing number.
- Compare two quotes on the same day. Look at the rate and the fee together, and check them against Bangladesh Bank's published rate.
- Send a small amount first. Wait until your family confirms it has arrived before sending more.
- Keep the records on both sides. Save the receipt and reference number in Australia; ask your family to keep the bank SMS or statement in Bangladesh.
- Ask before a big transfer. For anything near the 20,000 US dollar line, ask the receiving bank about Form-C first, and ask whether any remittance incentive applies.

Common mistakes Bangladeshi workers make with remittances
- Using hundi to save a few taka. There is no proof the money came from your wages, and no one to complain to if it is lost.
- Sending money for a relative's "visa". If someone asks you to pay so a cousin can get a sponsored visa, stop: it is illegal to pay an employer for sponsorship. Read our explainer on why buying an Australia visa in Bangladesh is a crime.
- Paying into a personal account for a "job offer". A message asking your family to pay a fee to secure a job for someone else is a classic scam sign. Our seven checks for a fake Australia job offer work for your relatives too.
- Promising your family the gross pay. Tax comes out and super goes into a fund. Budget on what reaches your bank account.
- Keeping no papers at home. Your family should know where the transfer records, your BMET clearance papers and any insurance details are kept. Our guide to the BMET clearance fee and which receipts to keep explains why.
